| In an effort to soft-pedal emotional reactions from the audience over the controversial topic of ethnic diversity, this rejected version travels another route to tell the story of the star-crossed lovers. Here Anita registers mute distress at the fact that Maria has brought home a six-foot three-inch tall mouse. Maria dismisses Anita's stern reminder that Maria is already betrothed to the promising young laboratory assistant Chino. Anita's initial misgivings over the inter-species romance inevitably turns to desolation when she learned the rodent has fatally bitten her boyfriend Bernardo out of misplaced outrage for mistakenly calling him "chicken" instead of "mouse." The romance is ultimately thwarted by an unfortunate meeting with Chino, who was walking home from the laboratory in search of new specimens for experimentation. |
