...and so forth

Audiences continue to be attracted to the masterwork by a variety of promotional designs, only a fraction of which appear here.

A simple drawing in familiar colors was featured on the program cover for a 1960s U.S. stock production that starred Pat Boone and Marlys Watters.

Stock productions starring Anna Maria Alberghetti and Leslie Uggams featured programs for which the title alone constituted the entire design, either red on black or black on red.

This design, taking a rare opportunity to combine the romance and the gang warfare in one dramatic take, was used to advertise a 1983 Australian production.

The Saul Bass lettering combines with a reverse-image graphic against an orange background for this logo, which announced two London revivals during the 1970s, as well as a pre-London tour of the UK.

The playbill cover of the 1991 Revival at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse offers a clear case of "go with what works." Like other examples within this feature, at this point in time the graphic elements of the Saul Bass logo would have been instantly recognized and identifiable even if the title of the musical were not part of the design. Many dozens and hundreds of dozens of productions have gone and will continue to go this route.

Music Theater International made this program (and other advertising material) available to theater companies performing the work.

At the dawn of a new century, with the masterwork approaching its fiftieth anniversary, yet one more production demonstrates its confidence in a well-established tradition.
