January, 1961

The pin-up boy on this month's cover is none other than Roger Moore, displaying just a little less than what was decently conventional in 1961, some twelve years before taking on his tour of duty as James Bond. Among the other items of interest that Mr. Moore is covering in this British version of the popular magazine is a two-page spread previewing the film release of West Side Story, some nine months in advance of the actual world premiere in New York. The boiler-plate article is long on fanzine chatter and short on facts--understandably so, since the film was still in production at the time of publication--but the hum of excited anticipation is unmistakable, even at this early stage. Reserved in other ways, the British population was neither timid nor tentative about their enthusiasm for the stage work, and their demonstrable eagerness to view the cinematic product is a most gratifying sentiment they share with their American cousins.
