September, 1957

Dance is the theme of this cover, which pictures the Royal Ballet's Margot Fonteyn and Michael Somes, heralding a lavish text and photo spread within its pages. The magazine is announcing the arrival of the company to the Colonies' shores, commencing a twenty-one week tour throughout the country, beginning at the New York Metropolitan Opera House on September 8.

Dance is also a feature of interest in a more modest but no less significant article in the issue, a preview of the rehearsing/previewing musical West Side Story which was scheduled to premiere at the Winter Garden later the same month. The emphasis is on the well-known intention of the collaborators to cast the show with unknowns ("No stars wanted"), with accompanying photos of the piece in progress, including one audition shot startingly reminiscent of the memorable Chorus Line line-up, but for the absence of female aspirants.
