A Chorus Line and West Side Story were around-the-corner neighbors for most of 1980, playing at the Shubert and the Minskoff respectively as shown in this pullout directory from Playbill Magazine. The revival of WSS would play through the end of November of that year; having reached the five-year mark, ACL was only a third of the way to becoming (what was at the time) the longest-running musical in Broadway history, racking up a total of 6137 performances when it closed in April 1990.

Thousands of dancer-actors have credentials in both musicals, only a few of whom are listed below. No such list, however short, could exist without the mention of Michael Bennett, whose child, perhaps whose legacy, A Chorus Line is. But his extensive and undeniably distinguished list of credits as a director and choreographer are nevertheless preceded by a run of on-stage appearances, including stock productions of West Side Story as Baby John or Action, and on a few occasions as choreographer.

Bob Avian was assistant choreographer on several Michael Bennett productions, including the original ACL, and he directed the 2006 Broadway revival. He also appeared as Indio while understudying Bernardo in WSS’s 1960 Broadway Return Engagement, and played Juano in 1961's Tel Aviv production.

Joe Bennett, pictured here as Zach on Broadway, also appeared as Riff and Action in several WSS productions in the U.S. and Australia.

Michael Berresse, who appeared as Zach in ACL’s 2006 Broadway revival, also played Diesel in a 1991 stock production of WSS.

Mark Bove has credits for Riff, Action and Bernardo in WSS and in Jerome Robbins Broadway, as well as appearances as Al and Mike in the original company of ACL.

Jerry Colker took over as Al in the original company of A Chorus Line and appeared as Snowboy and later as Riff in the 1980 Broadway Revival of WSS.

Charlotte D'Amboise was seen as Anita (among several roles) in Jerome Robbins Broadway and later won the role of Cassie in ACL’s 2006 Broadway revival.

Michael Gruber played Mike in the final cast of the original Broadway company of ACL before joining a US tour of WSS as Riff. By taking over the role of Greg in July 2007, Mr. Gruber achieved the distinction of appearing in both Broadway productions of A Chorus Line.

Avind Harum was Riff in the 1968 Lincoln Center production of WSS and took over the role of Zach in the original company of ACL.

Barbara Luna played Anita in the 1968 Lincoln Center production of WSS, and later joined the original company of ACL as Diana.

Robert LuPone appeared as A-rab in the 1968 Lincoln Center production of WSS before creating the role of Zach in A Chorus Line.

John Mineo played Jets and Sharks on Broadway and on tour before joining the original company of ACL where he played or understudied a number of roles.

Bebe Neuwirth was Sheila in the original company of ACL and appeared as Anita in the Cleveland Opera 1988 production of WSS.

Don Percassi was the original Al on Broadway and the original Luis in London, also understudying A-rab and Baby John.

After his film appearance as Big Deal and at least one stage production, in which he played Riff opposite Larry Kert, Scooter Teague played Zach in two National Tours of ACL.
