LONDON

For the original London production, the cover of the playbill (a term used here for consistency only; the British call this smaller book of information a "Programme") highlighted the dancing talents of Anita and Bernardo - or, more specifically, those of the two superb dancer-actors playing the roles, Chita Rivera and Ken Le Roy. This picture was actually taken by Fred Fehl for the New York production, in which these two performers also appeared. This photo appears to have been the cover piece for the entire London run, December 1958 through June 1961.

If there was ever any doubt, up to this point, of this photo's potential role as an enduring graphic symbol of the show, consider its appearance on the cover of the program (called the "Brochure" in the British theater community) of the original London presentation, a production in which neither Carol Lawrence nor Larry Kert ever appeared. At this early stage the 56th Street photo was already an icon representing the lively spirit of the show, and no longer "merely" a portrait of the two Broadway leading players.
