INTERNATIONAL TOUR
1995 - 1997
This playbill cover combines elements of its legacy from earlier designs with a bold new drawing that imitates a popular graphic style of the 1950s. A familiar red-and-black motif is re-introduced, and the lettering of the title evokes that of the famous Saul Bass logo for the film. In its choice of a picture, patently the focus of the cover, the 1995-1997 International Tour offered a unique take on the musical, presenting a scene reminiscent of the covers of pulp fiction that depicts the two lovers (presumably Anita and Bernardo) enjoying a romantic interlude. This drawing was used for much of the advertising of the tour, including playbill covers and window cards.
The souvenir program switches from Sharks to Jets, from lovers to gang members, from romance to dance. The scene is the well-known "knee-snap" from "Cool," and consists of a photograph of members of the tour cast.
When the company toured Japan, the souvenir program switched back to this cover.
