NEW YORK
CITY CENTER
1964
The New York City Center was the scene of the first Broadway revival of the musical, in April of 1964. Due to the wide range of productions offered by this estimable organization, the cover of their Playbill did not change with each show, but instead depicted a rendition of the building’s façade.
The souvenir program, on the other hand, was naturally dedicated to the work at hand. This cover appears to wish to borrow from the phenomenal success of the film. Not only do we see the title in lettering already made famous by the logo created for the movie by Saul Bass, but the familiar silhouette of the two lovers is unmistakably a cut-out of the picture of Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer repeating the original 56th Street pose, a picture used, among other places, on the film’s own souvenir program.
