THE GROWTH OF AN IDEA

This article was first published in the New York Herald Tribune on August 4, 1957, with the show only weeks away from its first preview in Washington DC.

It was written by Arthur Laurents, the author of the show's libretto.

For the next eleven years the article appeared under the title "Footnotes to a Musical" in the souvenir program of every major production of West Side Story: 1957 original, London 1958, first U.S National Tour, Broadway Return Engagement 1960, City Center 1964, Lincoln Center 1968. In every case the article was accompanied by the picture presented below, one not only of Mr. Laurents but, fittingly and admirably, of the creative team.

Please note that to read this article you will be leaving West Side Story on Stage and visiting our good friends at westsidestory.com. Please enjoy your stay there and come back soon.
